EXCERPT FROM THE OUTLOOK STORY:

A Steely Resolve

By Nick Madigan, Staff Writer for The Outlook

Artist Pascal Giacomini has a vision: Make outdoor, public art a permanent and natural part of the L.A. landscape

In Pascal Giacomini's native France, statues, sculptures and murals have always been a permanent, natural part of the urban environment.

Not so in America, but Giacomini wants to start a trend. He has placed 19 of his towering steel pieces around Malibu, adding stark, angular beauty to the rolling coastal landscape.

"The only way to have any impact with sculpture is outdoors, especially in California, where you don't have a lot of outdoor art, to say the least," the sculptor said this week as he walked around his works in the Malibu Civic Center area, in two shopping malls nearby and at Malibu Bluffs Park. "There's more public art in Tijuana than in Los Angeles."

The new show, called Malibu Summer Artwalk and set to wrap at the end of August, is the first of what city officials hope will be open-air exhibits year-round.
